Kylie Jenner and The Simpsons Rule the Cryptoverse in New Treehouse of Horror Clip

Kylie Jenner got up and worked: The mogul is a guest voice on this year’s “Treehouse of Horror” episode of “The Simpsons,” and Variety has a first look below. In the Season 35 edition, “Treehouse of Horror XXXIV,” Bart is turned into an NFT — and Marge travels through the blockchain to save her son.

In the segment, Kylie Jenner is one of a handful of celebrities — also including Jimmy Fallon and Rob Gronskowski — who are the “illuminati of the crypto universe” and help Marge find Bart. Jenner plays herself, while comedian and voice actor Matt Friend is behind the Fallon parody.

Showrunner Matt Selman said the idea for a take on the NFT craze came directly from exec producer James L. Brooks. “The craze has gone up and down and mostly down since we started writing it,” Selman noted. “But we just thought the idea of all these celebrities who don’t really understand the blockchain — who are so running over each other to promote it and make deals and get rich off it — was a funny area to include. Celebrities who may not really know that much about how cryptocurrency works are the spokesman for this incredibly complicated thing called cryptocurrency.”

Selman said the show approached Jenner — and she was game to poke a little fun at herself. “We wrote her some pages, and I think it’s a good fit. She was up for it and game to be made fun of as a celebrity shill.”

It also didn’t hurt that “The Kardashians” is now on Hulu, which makes Jenner part of the Disney family — just as “The Simpsons” became a Disney property after the acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s library.

“It was a bit of a door opener,” Selman noted. “I think as someone playing themselves, the part has comedic integrity.”

Meanwhile, in another segment, Kelsey Grammer returns as Sideshow Bob — and this time, it’s an alternate history as “The Simpsons” showcases what might have happened if he had been successful of killing Bart in the series’ Season 5 “Cape Feare” episode.

The “Treehouse of Horror XXXIV” episode of “The Simpsons” airs on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. — and yes, Selman knows that’s after Halloween. But “Treehouse” has frequently aired after the holiday, due to Fox scheduling complications over sports in the fall.

Because of the early deadlines for animation, “The Simpsons” and its animated brethren are among the few first-run scripted series on the network fall schedules due to the Hollywood strikes. Selman said there’s a chance there will be no (or very little) interruption in the show’s Season 35 episodic pattern, as “we hit the ground running” after the WGA strike ended. (Meanwhile, animated series like “The Simpsons” doesn’t fall under the SAG-AFTRA contract that is at the heart of the guild’s current strike, meaning production can continue on that end as well.)

“Our amazing line producer Richard Chung has moved mountains beyond a reasonable craziness to get new shows on for our season finale in April or May,” Selman said. “So it’s sort of “It’s a little bit of uncharted territory, but we’re working to get the shows on the air.”
