It's officially cosy girl season, and you know what that means. Cosy girls everywhere are spinning, trying to find out how to make a new Pumpkin spice latte hair colour work on them. We don't blame them. It's only right, with two million searches for #pumpkinspicehair on TikTok this deliciously warm and cozy shade is a fusion of autumn's best hues. It combines the deep, inviting coppery hues, reminiscent of the most autumn beverage of all – the pumpkin spice latte (Starbucks, what did you do to us?). There are also some strawberry blonde tones thrown in, to add dimension and a more natural finish.
How to achieve pumpkin spice latte hair?
When it comes to hair, pumpkin spice latte colour is heavily Kim Possible coded, if you're a 90s Disney kid, you will remember the fiery copper hue the cartoon starlet rocked. It's something like that, but humanised, with a lot more dimension.
We asked Laura Elliott, head of education at haircare professionals, Neäl & Wølf, what to ask your professional colourist when transitioning to the autumnal ‘pumpkin spice latte colour’ and how to maintain the look all season long. Laura explains “Taking its name from the popular ‘it girl’ drink (pumpkin spice latte) this rich warm colour incorporates blends of copper, chestnut, amber, pecan, and red gold hues to create a multidimensional effect perfect for autumn.”
Laura then adds: “To get the look, I recommend taking in reference pictures for your stylists to work off as everyone has a totally different starting point and therefore will each require a different colour formula to achieve a similar outcome, this is why reference pictures or mood boards are super important.”
It's important to remember that no colour trend is a ‘one size fits all’ so be open minded when discussing the best undertones for your complexion with your hair colourist.
“Certain hair tones sit differently depending on the tone of your skin, but the beauty of these copper tones particularly ‘pumpkin spice latte’ is that it works beautifully with all skin types and complexions. If you have a warmer complexion I would suggest experimenting more with the gold and copper hues but if you have cooler toned skin, ask your stylist to soften the gold and copper hues making the overall colour more beige to avoid bringing too much natural warmth out of the skin.” says Laura.
How to maintain pumpkin spice latte hair colour
To keep your pumpkin spice latte hair looking as vibrant and luscious as the day you dyed it, a few maintenance tips are in order. Firstly, invest in a sulfate-free colour-safe shampoo and conditioner designed to preserve and protect your new hues. Washing your hair in cool water rather than hot can also help prevent colour fade.
Laura then adds: “Any variation of copper can be high maintenance and fades quickly compared to darker colours, such as rich brunettes or jet blacks. Warm coppery colours such as pumpkin spice latte, especially in the summer months when exposed to UV rays, will require toning every six to eight weeks depending on the intensity of the red colour and your previous hair colour.”
To help condition your pumpkin spice latte hair in between salon appointments and maintain its vibrancy, Laura also recommend using a hydrating hair mask or a nourishing hair oil.

Heat protection sprays are the best way to prevent moisture loss and smooth down frizz, making pumpkin spice latte hair shine brighter. Look for a finishing spray that offers UV and heat protection as even in the winter the sun can fade coloured hair,” she adds.

Sunscreen sprays for hair are a must for sunny days (not that we'll have any if we stick around during this very British autumn), as UV rays can cause colour degradation. Lastly schedule touch-ups every six to eight weeks to keep your pumpkin spice latte hair looking as sleek and shiny as Kim Possible's.
